The word “taiji”, translated literally, means “great pole”. It is a Chinese cosmological word that means “Supreme Ultimate”. The concept of taiji (supreme ultimate) is contrasted by wuji (without ultimate) and these concepts appear in both Taoist and Confucian Chinese philosophy.
